Barry Hoffman Obituary
Barry William Hoffman peacefully passed away at his home in Holly Ridge on April 24, 2025, at the age of 75. He was born on March 30, 1950, in Queens, NY to the late William O. Hoffman and Betty (Bogdan) Hoffman. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and legendary sandwiches.
Barry was a man of many talents and passions. After high school, he graduated from the Police Academy and served with dedication in the New York City Police Department. He took part in numerous historic events from persuading Philippe Petite to conclude his tightrope walk between the Twin Towers, removing Robin Williams in pantomime from the steps of the Metropolitan Museum, to managing crowds at the Dakota following the death of John Lennon. However, in 1983, he traded his badge to follow his true passion and opened Valley Deli in Jefferson Valley, New York. He later brought his metropolitan fare to the coast of North Carolina when he created the New York Corner Deli in Surf City, where his famous Richie Goldsand sandwich became a local legend. His carefree, no-worries personality made him a beloved figure in the community, and his business acumen ensured that anyone who walked into his deli left with a full stomach and a smile.
In addition to his work, Barry loved playing billiards and shooting pool, and he had a deep appreciation for classic cars. He had a terrific sense of humor and delighted in the comedy of Laurel & Hardy and the Marx Brothers. His interests and hobbies reflected his zest for life and his ability to find joy in simple pleasures.
Barry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, June Hoffman, with whom he shared over 55 wonderful years. He was a provider who enjoyed nothing more than raising his three sons, who worked alongside him in his delis-He is survived by his three sons: William Hoffman (Grace) of Holly Ridge, Joseph Hoffman (Elana) of Sneads Ferry, and Alexander Hoffman of Portsmouth, Virginia. He also leaves behind two cherished grandchildren, Isabelle and Natalie Hoffman, and his brother, Thomas Hoffman and his wife Jane of Sayville, New York.
Barry's life will be celebrated at a later date, where stories will be shared, laughter will be abundant, and perhaps a few sandwiches will be consumed in his honor. Barry lived life on his own terms, with a heart as big as his appetite and a spirit as free as the ocean breeze he so loved. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. To express condolences, to share a memory or photo, please do so on the tribute wall.
