Barry Mix Obituary

Barry Everett Mix

March 3, 1942 - December 19, 2025

Barry Everett Mix, of Queensbury, NY, died peacefully at home on Friday, December 19, 2025.

Barry was born on March 3, 1942 in Albion, NY. He was raised by his parents Newell and Genevieve Mix on the family farm in West Barre, NY, where he learned the value of hardwork, good humor, and pride in ownership at an early age. After high school, he set off on a cross country roadtrip with friends that would launch a lifetime of adventures and kick off a running family joke that found him admitting to his family that he had actually "been there before."

He attended SUNY Morrisville and earned his BS and MS degrees from SUNY Brockport and SUNY Oneonta, respectively. While teaching near Syracuse, he met and married the love of his life Margaret (Peg) Stuppy, embarking on new adventures and 55 years of a loving marriage together. As newlyweds, they opened their home to foster children, with three children of their own following soon afterward. Barry had a persistent, quick wit, and puns appropriate for every occasion. He captured almost every highlight of his children's basketball games by camcorder and his impromptu bedtime stories on family camping trips were always riddled with life lessons.

He described his professional life as varied, with more than 20 years as a vocational counselor with BOCES, and adventures as co-owner of 12 Maples tack shop that grew into a feed mill (Mix & Hill, Medina, NY), restaurant supply salesman, teacher, and John Deere salesman. In retirement, he delighted in household projects, briefly running a concrete refinishing business and then renovating and operating an 1870s era bed and breakfast, The Alpine Homestead, in Olmstedville, NY. In the last years of his life, he meticulously restored a 1976 John Deere Lawn Tractor and a cast iron John Deere Toy Tractor that his younger brother and countless Mix relatives had grown up playing with.

Barry's varied pursuits led the Mix family to live in small towns throughout NY and PA, from Medina, Herkimer, and Fort Edward, NY to Elizabethville, PA. He joined and served numerous churches, always embracing the notion of a welcoming Christ overflowing with grace for all. He leveraged his varied life experiences to find something in common with almost everyone–using these coincidences to spark conversation or brighten someone's day. He made a special effort to reach out to those whose life circumstances made them unaccustomed to such generosity of spirit, always quick to offer a smile, an unexpected ride home, or encouragement that they could accomplish things they never knew possible.

Barry was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Judy Capurso, and his brother, Dennis. He is survived by his wife, Peg; his sons Chad (Lindsey) of Wilmington, DE and Troy (Shelley) of West Grove, PA and his daughter Kimberlee (Ramgopal Mettu) of New Orleans, LA; his seven grandchildren, Sutton, Kiran, Henry, Priya, Everett, Owen, and Allison; in-laws Ellen and Rick Brown (Lancaster, PA), George and Mary Anne Stuppy (Gap, PA), Joe and Nancy Capurso (Rochester, NY) and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church United Methodist, 54 Bay Street, Glens Falls, NY on Sunday, December 28 at 3pm. In Barry's memory, contributions can be made in his name to the Sunday Suppers Program at Christ Church United Methodist or in support of vocational training programs at BOCES. Barry's family would like to thank the nursing staff on T6 at Glens Falls Hospital, High Peaks Hospice, and their church family, neighbors and friends.

Arrangements are in the care of M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home 136 Main St. South Glens Falls, NY 12803. To view Barry's Book of Memories and post online condolences please visit kilmerfuneralhome.com.

During 1967-1968 Barry and I and Mark shared an apartment in Oneonta as we were working on our Masters degrees. He was a great guy and I still remember his good nature and character. I realize knowing him was a blessing. Rest in peace Barry and God bless you and your loved ones.

I am so sorry to read about Barry´s passing. He and Peg were wonderful "neighbors " to my mom Marge Strohmeyer. He meticulously kept the Alpine Homestead. The 4 season Inn always looked its best. Sending love and condolences. Lisa Fabin

Annalee and I were deeply saddened to hear of Barry´s passing on 12/19/25.
Barry and I were colleagues at BOCES on Dix Ave in Hudson Falls for over 10 years. He was a great counselor and a great friend who could always be counted on. He loved his family and the Lord, values we both shared.
We re very sorry we will not be able to attend Barry´s services as we will be at our daughter´s in TN for our yearly visit. We will certainly be there in spirit.
