Life Celebration of Mr. Barry G. Rush
On Wednesday, April 5, 2023 our community sadly lost a brother, father, nephew, cousin, and friend to many when Mr. Barry G. Rush peacefully passed away after a brief illness.
Barry was born November 15, 1971 in Charleston, South Carolina to Georgetta Bash and Calvin Simmons.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents, paternal grandparents Franklin and Maggie Simmons; maternal grandparents James and Gertrude Curry; uncles Jerome and A.C. Simmons, aunts Rebecca Powell, Betty Simmons (George) Campbell, and Joann B. (Lee A.) Marshall.
Throughout the Moncks Corner Community and by all who knew him, he was affectionately known as "Bird Dog, B-Rabbit, or B" depending on how you knew him. He learned to love God at an early age and became a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Pinopolis, SC where he received Christ as his Lord and Savior. For many years he attended church services at Kingdom Redemption International Ministries, Moncks Corner, SC. Later he was a member of Christianity Holiness Church, Moncks Corner, SC and was an active member of Jehovah Jireh Life Ministry, Cordesville, SC. Barry loved to sign and was a member of several choirs. His favorite song was, "I'll Rise Again!"
For many years, Barry was his mother's youngest child. As the youngest boy of the family, he was spoiled by all and given the nick name of "Bird Dog" and "B-Rabbit". Growing up he loved hanging out with friends, playing football, and watching Worldwide Wrestling Federation. He loved to go fishing - (According to his brothers, not sure if he ever caught any! hosting parties, and eating seafood with crabs being his favorite!
Barry attended Berkeley High School where he was a member of the varsity football team and the AFJROTC. Over the years, he became probably Berkeley High School's biggest FAN! He loved the Stags' Track and Field, Basketball, and his favorite, Football Athletics. The only thing that surpassed his love of Berkeley Football, was on a professional level - THE DALLAS COWBOYS! No matter the outcome of each season, Barry would always say, "Next year, we are going to have a better season! Oh yeah, we're going to the playoffs!"
Barry began his working career with the International Longshoremen Association and decided that this field was not for him. Instead, he pursued his love of food by working in various restaurants, working in auto detailing, and landscaping. None of these occupations compares to the love Barry had for his family.
Surviving family are his daughters, Destiny and Maya Rush; his siblings: Jerry Aldrick Rush, Wanda M. Rush, Barbara Darlene Mathis, Franklin (Erica) Simmons, Calvin (Natasha) Simmons, Wanda Simmons (Carlos Powell), and Tyrone Marion; his uncles and aunts: Shirley Elliot, Leon Simmons, Fernwell (Ferndina) Simmons, Mary (Avonne) Ford, Octhetis (Anthony) Clouden, Alma Liferidge, James H. (Vanessa) Curry, E. Gail (Jasper) Addison, Leon "Tony" Curry, and Ralph (Andrea) Curry; Nieces and nephews: Tenesha Bradford, Shatina Bradford, Courtney J. Aiken, Christian, Christopher, and Kamari Mathis; Keyanna Williams, Makayla and Kaitlyn Simmons, Genesis and Calvin Simmons, Jr., Kamani and Kamiya Miller, Rodney Rivers, and Ase Jefferson; Step-mother Bertha Green Simmons; Special Cousins: Clifford "Macaroni" Powell, Willie "Buck" Powell, Annette (Cyrus) Weston, Donald Bash, Pamela, Anthony, and Terry Powell, Latyra Gibbs, Raymond Simmons, Leslie Marshall, Michelle Cooper Weathers, Arnika (Mashund) Edwards, and Donald M. "Scooter" Bash and Tiffany Lockwood ; Special Friend Keith Mathis, and a host of other cousins, relatives and friends.
