Basil E. Stone
Basil E. Stone, 89, CWO4, USCGR - Ret., of Ellington, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, November 2, 2025, with his loving wife of 56 years by his side. He died as he lived, with dignity and grace.
Born on May 18, 1936, in Farmington, Maine, he was the son of the late Vincent Stone and Madeline (Fossett) Stone. Basil was a graduate of the University of Connecticut, where he played the saxophone in the marching band, an instrument made in 1914, which was later played by his son and granddaughter. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he was a Hospital Corpsman based in Bethesda, MD and Argentia, Newfoundland. He also served for 23 years in the United States Coast Guard Reserve in New London, CT and Governors' Island, NY, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer. Basil retired from the UConn Health Center in Farmington, CT, after a 20+ year career as a Research Technologist in Rheumatology. Before his career at the Health Center, Basil worked in the lab at Rockville General Hospital, where he met the love of his life, Dawn. He later returned to the RGH lab until retiring, for the third and final time, in 2004.
Basil enjoyed visiting the MidCoast area of Maine, watching the Red Sox, cheering on UConn Basketball, spending time with his family, particularly as Pop Pop to his six grandchildren, and collecting rocks.
Basil is deeply missed by his beloved wife, Dawn (Arens) Stone, his children, Katherine Meyer of Tolland and her husband, Chris, Frank Stone of Ellington and his partner, Ellen Ballos, and Heather Henry of Carbondale, CO and her husband, Mike; as well as grandchildren, Katia, Julia and Laura Meyer, Jacob and Savannah Stone, and Eli Henry, and many generations of cousins in the Fossett family in Maine. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Nan Arens, and her husband, David Kendrick, and Dawn's many other family members.
Basil will be remembered for his enduring kindness, scientific mind, steadfast loyalty, and his impeccable imitation of a particular cartoon cat. He was predeceased by his beloved dog, Duke, with whom we are certain he is now reunited – along with a plethora of previous family pets who adored him.
A celebration of Basil's life will be held on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 11:00am at the Somers Congregational Church, 599 Main Street, Somers, CT. His burial with full military honors will be held privately, at the convenience of his family. Services will be celebrated by Rev. Don Francois. Ladd, Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home in Vernon has been entrusted with Basil's arrangements.
