Benjamin Hernandez Obituary

Benjamin Hernandez of Conroe, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, after a brief illness, at the age of 82. He was born on February 16, 1942, to parents, Juan and Librada Hernandez.

Benjamin is survived by his three children, Ana Thorn and husband Mark Thorn, John Michael Hernandez and wife Cheryl Hernandez; and Antonio Hernandez and wife Cindy Hernandez, his grandchildren, Nicole Odom and husband Zack Odom, Alisha Lisk and husband Taylor Lisk, Brook Thorn, Danielle Hernandez, J.D. Legg; Samuel Hernandez, and Emily Hernandez; two great-grandchildren, Zealand Odom, and Benjamin Lisk; his sisters, Lidia Shadle, and Consuela Roussett; and his brother, Ruben Hernandez; along with many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Hernandez; sister, Elizabeth Garcia; and his brothers, Francisco, and Roberto Hernandez.

Born and raised in Huntsville, Texas, Benjamin lived in Conroe for approximately 54 years. After graduating from Huntsville High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving for five years aboard the USS St. Paul. It was during his service in San Diego, California, that he met and married his wife, Maria Hernandez. After leaving the Navy, they moved to Huntsville, where he worked at Peden Iron & Steel before beginning a long career at Moran Utilities, where he eventually retired.

Mr. Hernandez was deeply passionate about sports, particularly baseball and softball. He coached Conroe Area Youth Baseball (CAYB) and the Moran Utilities team, the Blue Flames, for a few years before coaching his son's baseball teams. He also assisted in coaching his daughter and granddaughters' softball teams. Many of the kids he coached still called him Coach Ben to this day. He led his baseball teams to multiple District and State championships. He was dedicated to the CAYB organization, serving as Groundskeeper, Coach, Board Member, and President.

Benjamin was also active in his community as a Member and President of the Conroe Jaycees and oversaw events such as Memorial Day and 4th of July celebrations and organized the annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive. Outside of his community involvement, he loved hunting and fishing, and his home was adorned with trophies from his outdoor pursuits.

Benjamin Hernandez will be remembered fondly for his dedication to his family, his community, and his passions. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the memories he created.

Visitation will be held at McNutt Funeral Home, in Conroe, Texas, on Friday, June 28, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will take place on the following day, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at McNutt Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be held at Houston National Cemetery, on a date that has yet to be determined.

David and I saw the memorial tribute of Uncle Ben. It was so artistically well done. The music was so beautiful, it made us cry. Uncle Ben was so loved by all. I know family meant EVERYTHING to him. My heart is soothed knowing he is in heaven with Aunt Mary. Together again
