Benjamin Khan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by The Cremation Society of Iowa - Des Moines on Mar. 13, 2026.
Benjamin Francis Khan passed away in his home in West Des Moines on April 19th, 2025. Benjamin was born Oct 10th, 1955, in Rawalpindi Pakistan. In 1965 he immigrated to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa with his four siblings, and parents, Theodore and Mohini Khan. This is where Theodore would take a professorship at Iowa Wesleyan College. Growing up in a small rural community as a young immigrant, was not without challenges. But Ben was quick to win people over with his charismatic charm and winning smile. Ben had a stellar high school career as a Center for the Mt. Pleasant Panthers and was named to the Iowa "All-State" team. Ben went on to receive a scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa. Ben loved talking about specific games, coaches, players and even plays. He cherished the memories of his football days deeply.

In 1977 Ben married the love of his life, Susan Marie Vulich, after which they made their first home in Mt. Pleasant. Ben's genuine empathy and concern for others was evidenced by his position as a Social Worker. He counseled and advocated on behalf of young men at the Christamore House in Mt. Pleasant.

The couple would eventually make their way to West Des Moines where Ben would continue his career as a Social Worker. In Des Moines Ben's path expanded to advocating for mental health and drug abuse support and services for a wide range of people over many years.

Ben was committed to his community and active in his church life, where he taught Sunday school. Ben had an unwavering loyalty to the University of Michigan football program. He and Sue even named their much-adored golden retriever, Bo, after U of M's famous coach. They also loved travelling to the Colorado Rockies, which held a special place in their hearts.

After the death of his beloved wife in 2012, Ben pursued supporting nonprofits that had been close to Sue's heart, in the Philippines. In his last years Ben preferred a quiet life at their home in West Des Moines. Here the memories of happier times provided him with great comfort.

Proceeding him in death are his parents, Theodore and Mohini Khan, and his wife Susan Marie Khan. He will be missed by his brothers, Donald (Angie) Khan of San Antonio, Texas, Ronald (Cynthia) Khan of Salado, Texas. His sisters Annadora Khan of Iowa City, Iowa and Christine (Sam) King of Detroit, Michigan, along with many nieces and nephews. The family would also like to acknowledge the kindness and support of Pastor Steve Beeman of Des Moines and Thomas Beasley of Des Moines.

Memorial donations may be sent to: Donations at The Animal Rescue League of Iowa. 5452 NE 22nd Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50313-2528.
