Benjamin Michael Sommo, of Cuba, MO, was born on Tuesday, September 3, 1946 in Manhattan, NY to George Sommo and Florence Rafaela Sommo, nee DeMayo. He passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at his son's home in Leasburg, MO at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 5 days.
Benjamin graduated from St. Raymond's Catholic School in New York and attended college before he decided to joined the United States Marines, where he served our country honorably during Vietnam. Decorations, medals and ribbons he was awarded were the Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation Award, Naval Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Medal and Combat Action Ribbon. Benjamin was a master mechanic, skills he put to use to maintain his vehicle for over 620,000 miles. Ben found joy driving, listening to music and seeking peace with his bride of 42 years, Reba. Ben & Reba were married on July 22, 1981 and three children were born of their love. Ben deeply loved his family. He shared his passion for cooking, shooting and the outdoors with his children. He shared his strong sense of humor with a lucky few. A man of multitudes, Ben was also a devout Catholic who leaned on prayer through his final days.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Florence Sommo; parents-in-law George Sousa and Barbara Jean Sousa, nee Sullivan; sister Mary Anne Tegtmeier and daughter Michelle Sommo.
Benjamin is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Reba Sousa-Sommo of Cuba, MO; children George Sommo of Hawaii, Beniamino Sousa-Sommo (spouse Kelly Pinnell) of Leasburg, MO, Leialoha Sousa-Sommo (spouse Cameron Sanders) of Alaska and Rafael Sousa-Sommo (wife Andi Gaither) of St. Louis, MO; step-daughters Christine (husband Ethan) Janes of California and Liza (husband Eric) Feldkamp of Texas; grandchildren Julia Sousa-Sommo, Amelia Sousa-Sommo, Misty Sommo, Ian Sommo and William Sommo; step-grandchildren Paolo Feldkamp and Savannah Janes; brother John (wife Peggy) Sommo of Maine; brothers-in-law George (wife Sharon) Sousa, David (wife Christine) Sousa both of California and John Tegtmeier of New York; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family chose cremation as his final disposition and the family will have a service at a later date. Memorials may be given to the funeral home to help the family with final expenses.
