Bernard Fegan Obituary
Brian is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Julia (Oates) Fegan; his children Brian Fegan, Teresa Hearty (Patrick), and Margaret Porter (Mark); his five cherished grandchildren, Mairead, Bridget, Maeve, Kevin, and Daniel; his brothers Seamus Fegan (Elizabeth) and Noel Fegan; his sister Maureen Browne (Liam); his brother in-law, PJ Conway and many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Born in Mullahoran, County Cavan, Ireland to Bernard and Bridget (Lynch) Fegan, Brian was predeceased by his brothers Bart Fegan and Peter Fegan (Collette), and his sister Katherine Conway.
Brian emigrated to the Bronx, NY in 1959, where he would later marry Julia Oates of County Mayo, Ireland in 1968. They moved to Blauvelt in 1976 where they continued to raise their family. Brian dedicated 46 years of his life as a pressman for The New York Times.
A devout parishioner of St. Catharine's Roman Catholic Church, Brian was also a founding member of the Rockland Irish-American Cultural Center in Blauvelt. He maintained a deep love for his Irish heritage and found great joy in dancing with Julia to Irish and country western music. For many years, Brian was a familiar and beloved figure on the sidewalks of Blauvelt and the paths of Rockland Lake during his daily walks. He also enjoyed gardening, cheerfully singing Irish tunes around the house, quietly solving NYT word puzzles and the warm company of his family and good friends. He always had a warm smile for whomever he met.
Brian will be forever remembered as a gentle, kind, and wonderfully funny man. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and "PopPop" whose warm light and joyful spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, June 22nd from 2 – 7pm at Mortiz Funeral Home in Tappan, NY. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 23 at 10am at St. Catharine's Church in Blauvelt, NY. Burial follows at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Nanuet, NY.
