Bernard L. Foster, 93, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday March 30, 2024 at Elkhart General Hospital, Elkhart. He was born May 29, 1930 in Elkhart to Henry and Earline (Crosbie) Foster.
He married Ruth Ann Berkshire on November 27, 1952 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Elkhart. They were married 64 years before her passing in March of 2016.
Bernie served in the US Army during the Korean War until he was discharged with honors.
Bernie leaves behind his children, Gary (April) Foster of Ligonier, Daniel (Karen) Foster of Pittsburg, PA, Beth (Kenny) Mahaffa of Goshen, Patrick (Katy) Foster of St. Joe, MI, Paula (Todd) Checkley of Goshen, and daughter in law Barbara Foster;10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren, his sister Barbara Lewallen of Goshen and brother David (Karen) Foster of Mishawaka.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruth and his son Dennis in August of 2023 and his brother Charles Foster.
After serving in the military, Bernie worked for H.G. Christman Construction Company of South Bend as superintendent of construction for 45 years. Bernie was a die hard Notre Dame fan. He enjoyed watching football and the men's and women's basketball teams. Most of all though was his love of his family.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 pm Thursday April 4, 2024 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514 where a Rosary will be at 7:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11am Friday April 5, 2024 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1405 North Main Street, Elkhart, IN 46514 with Fr. Logan Parrish officiating. There will be one hour of visitation before Mass. Burial will be at a later date in St. Vincent Cemetery.
Memorials may be made St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
