Bernard R. Liedy, 83, of Cumberland, passed away at home on April 8, 2025.
Born on May 15, 1941, in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late Martin V. Liedy, Sr. and Dorothy E. (Shipley) Liedy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary B. Reynolds; mother-in-law, Wilma Lantz; father-in-law and best friend, Donald D. Lantz; and sister-in-law, Gloria Crawford, whom Bernard considered his little sister.
Bernard proudly served with the United States Navy from 1961-1965 aboard the USS Intrepid. After an honorable discharge from the navy he began working as a truck driver with Kelly Springfield Tire Company. He retired after 25 years of service, but went on to work with Z&M Trucking, Overnight Trucking, and the Allegany County Roads Department before officially retiring in 2003.
Bernard was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post 13 and the Cumberland Outdoor Club and was also a member of the Kennells Mill Sportsmen's Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. His most memorable experiences were spending his summers with Sandy flounder fishing on their boat in Chincoteague, VA.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sandra (Lantz) Liedy; four children, David Liedy, Brian Liedy and wife Kerri, Vicki Gelles and husband Michael, and Jill Davis and husband Brian. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Martin V. Liedy, Jr. and wife Patricia; brother-in-law, James Reynolds; sisters-in-law, Janet Carder and Donna Brown.
Family and friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Friday, April 11, 2025 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A committal service and military honors, accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard, will follow at 1 p.m. at Maryland State Veteran's Cemetery, Rocky Gap.
The family wishes to express special thanks for the wonderful care given to Bernard by the V.A. Home Health Care, his many caregivers over the past three years, and UPMC Western Maryland Hospice Unit.
