Bernard Rawls, Jr., one of a three person team responsible for Minority Recruiting for the City of St. Petersburg's Police Department, was affectionately known as "Seven Months" by the unit members. The nickname was bestowed upon him by the unit administrator, Hank Ashwood, Sr. after Bernard informed us that he was a seven month baby.
A man of physical stature, Bernard wore the uniform well and was a recruiting poster figure. Many of the black, female and hispanic officers, communications operators and other city employees were recruited by the unit and Officer Rawls.
Bernard was an outstanding police officer who joined the department through the Police Trainee and Cadet program along with former officer Cornell Pierce and others. He and his legacy will be missed. I offer heartfelt condolences to his family.
