Bernetta Marie Smith (Hofschulte) passed away on October 14th, 2025, after a long and courageous struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born on July 12, 1939, in Hammond, Minnesota, Bernie was the second of six children to Peter and Edith Hofschulte (Herrick). She grew up in Plainview, MN, where she formed the values of kindness and resilience that would define her life.
On November 19, 1960, Bernie married Jule R. Smith of St. Charles, MN. Together they had three children—Peggy (Franksain), Robert, and Sandy (Peterson). Divorcing in 1976 she raised her three in Emmons, MN. Later, Bernie moved to Albert Lea, where she shared a loving and peaceful life with her longtime partner and best friend, Harlan Thompson. They enjoyed camping/campground hosting and taking long drives. Her family grew to eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Bernie worked at Mrs. Gerry’s and later became a familiar and friendly face at Nelson’s Market, where she was known for her warm smiles and cheerful greetings. There wasn’t a person she met she didn’t consider a friend. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit and the joy she brought to those around her.
A remembrance will be held in the near future.
