Bernice Johnson Obituary

Bernice G. Johnson, 97, of Keokuk, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025, at her home.

Bernice was born Dec. 28, 1927, at her childhood home in Summitville, Iowa, the daughter of Martin Peter and Julia Evelyn (Hoffman) Johnson.

She grew up on a farm and graduated from Montrose High School in 1945. She went on to work at Thomas Trucking and later Keokuk Steel Castings, where she retired in 1990. She was a member of Living Waters Assembly of God Church in Keokuk, where she taught Sunday school. Bernice enjoyed traveling, gardening and solving word searches. Most of all, she loved children and animals.

Bernice is survived by 13 nieces and nephews: David (Karen) Johnson of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, Cindy (Richard) Runge of Keokuk, Vicky Balentine of Keokuk, Richard Johnson of Keokuk, Teresa (David) Murray of Keokuk, Lois Thompson of Louisburg, Kansas, Linda Bleything of Louisburg, Lori (Lyle) Matteson of Donnellson, John (Peggy) Johnson of Keokuk, Jim (April) Johnson, Joe (Holli) Johnson of Montrose, Pam (John) Patterson of Keokuk, and Patty Guyman of Olathe, Kansas; 34 great-nieces and -nephews; 59 great-great-nieces and -nephews; and nine great-great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Bernice is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Emmett Johnson and LeRoy Johnson; her sister Dorothy Marsh; and her niece Diane Protsman.

A private graveside service will be held at Sandusky Cemetery in Sandusky, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
