Bernice Wilson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel & Crematory - Downtown on Jan. 6, 2026.
Bernice Wilson was born on February 7, 1946, in Hertford County, North Carolina, to the late Johnnie Howard and Gracie Benthall-Howard. She peacefully departed this life on Saturday, December 27, 2025, in Hoschton, Georgia.

Bernice was a loving and devoted woman whose life was defined by service, compassion, and an unwavering love for others, especially children. She opened both her home and her heart as a foster parent, caring for and nurturing many children over the years and leaving a lasting imprint on their lives. Her giving spirit extended into her professional life as well, as she faithfully served for several years as a cafeteria aide at Menchville High School in Newport News, VA. There, she was admired for her kindness, dependability, and warm, gentle presence.

In her leisure time, Bernice found happiness in life's simple joys. She enjoyed playing bingo, sewing, and cherishing time spent with family and friends. Her nurturing nature, generosity, and quiet strength touched everyone who knew her, and her memory will forever be treasured.

Bernice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dan Wilson of 47 bless years; her parents; and her siblings, Johnnie Howard Jr., Randolph Howard, Grace Washington, and Marie Younger.

Bernice leaves to cherish her memory of her loving children: Angela Bonner (Timothy), Timothy Wilson, Danny Wilson (Amaui), James Wilson (Melissa), and Anthony Wilson; her beloved foster children: Julia and Carolyn Maupen, Cynthia and Mone'a Cerezo, and Jirel Fisher; her siblings, Ann Tann, Doris Britt, Earnest Howard, Peggy Lawrence and Jalil Abdus-Samad (Dennis), along with 16 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.

Viewing will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the Celebration of Life service starting at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2026 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
