Bert Brown Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Heer Mortuaries & Crematory - Fort Morgan on Oct. 10, 2025.
Bert Davis Brown of Log Lane Village, CO passed away peacefully at Saint Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, CO on September 16, 2025.

He was born April 29, 1939, in Stowell, TX to Dave & Veachel Brown. As a young man he lived in Texas where he started school. He loved hunting and fishing with his father to help feed the family. The family moved to Arkansas where they had a dairy farm. His dad would wake Bert and his brothers up really early, give them a cup of strong coffee to keep them awake so they could milk the cows before breakfast.

Later on in life he moved to California and became a concrete finisher then moved back to Canadian, TX to become a roughneck. He was later transferred to Colorado to work at Turner Bros. in Fort Morgan. In 1969 the first person he met as he pulled into the yard was Roger Schiel, his boss's son, now a dear longtime friend.

In the mid 1970's Bert was in a work-related accident involving a 6,200-volt powerline that resulted in extensive critical burns. While hospitalized, he met Vera Washburn, one of his caregiving nurses, which resulted in a life partner for over 40 years.

Bert's love of fishing resulted in many awards. If anyone wanted to know where the fishing was good or what kind of pole and lure to use, he was the man to call, often known as the master angler.

Bert's kind heart and love for people resulted in more dear friends than anyone could imagine. His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure. He is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.

He is survived by his daughter, Teresa Hibbard and her husband, David of Centerton, AR; his grandchildren, Anthony Spillers and his wife, Christina of Richardson, TX, and Dr. Alisha Spillers of Anna, TX; and his great grandchildren, Olivia and Jonas Spillers. He is also survived by his half-sister, Jean Brown Garcia; his stepchildren, Evy Cooksey, Shirley Timmons and her husband, Gordon, Mel Washburn and his wife, Betty, Kay Guerin and her husband, Peter, Bonnie Reddick, and Vernetta Washburn, 29 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, and 48 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Tony; his partner in life, Vera Washburn; his brothers, Kyle, Dean, and Michael; his stepdaughters, Patty Massa and Verna Washburn; his stepson, Lyle Washburn; his sons-in-law, Vernon Cooksey and Terry Reddick and three grandchildren.

A service to celebrate Bert's life will be held at Platte Valley Baptist Church in Fort Morgan on Saturday, October 25th at 10:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Platte Valley Baptist Church Building Fund.
