Bertha Elizabeth (Wright) Besherse

A celebration of life service for Bertha Elizabeth (Wright) Besherse, 85, of Waurika, is scheduled for 2:00 P.M., Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the Addington Baptist Church in Addington, OK. Services are under the direction and care of Alexander Gray Funeral Home and Crematory in Ringling.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bertha Elizabeth Besherse, age 85, who left the world peacefully on March 15, 2025, in Waurika, Oklahoma. Born on July 15, 1939, in Ada, Oklahoma, Bertha was the beloved daughter of Basil and Christine Wright. Her journey through life was marked by her unwavering faith, boundless love for her family, and a dedication to serving her community and the children she taught.

Bertha’s early years were filled with learning and growth, leading her to achieve her Double Master’s Degree, coupled with an Early Childhood Certification. This accomplishment set the stage for nearly 40 years of devoted service as an educator. Bertha's passion for teaching children illuminated the lives of many, and her influence extended beyond the classroom. She took immense joy in teaching Sunday school and immersing herself in vacation Bible school, sharing her love for Jesus with countless young hearts.

On December 30, 1971, Bertha married her husband of 53 years, Haskell Dowell Besherse, in El Reno, Oklahoma. Their union was a partnership rooted in faith, mutual respect, and a shared love for family. Bertha and Haskell spent a lifetime together, creating a loving home filled with laughter and warmth.

Bertha is survived by her devoted husband, Haskell; her two daughters, Christa Foster and Beth Thaxton; her sons-in-law, John Foster and Brandon Thaxton. She was a proud grandmother to James and Kirstin Watson, Gabriel Foster, Nichoals and Karlee Gomez, and Kobe Thaxton. Bertha's legacy of love extends to her great-grandchildren, Everly and Harper Watson, who will carry her memory into the future.

Throughout her life, Bertha was known for her unique talents and creative spirit. She had a remarkable ability to do things like "build an elaborate float with nothing but chicken wire, masking tape, and straws," which showcased her ingenuity and determination. Her artistic flair not only shone through her love for painting and sewing but also in her creative planning for community events. Bertha was always available to lend a helping hand to those in need, embodying the spirit of service that she cherished deeply.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Roger Wright. While the pain of her loss is profound, her family takes comfort in knowing that her spirit lives on in them, in the lessons she imparted, and in the love she so fiercely shared.

As we remember Bertha Elizabeth Besherse, we celebrate a life lived fully—a life marked by education, creativity, and unwavering faith. She leaves behind not just a family, but a legacy of love and service that will continue to inspire all who knew her. May she rest in peace, enveloped in both the love of Christ and the love she gave so generously in her lifetime.
