Betsy Garrett Obituary

Betsy Ann Garrett, 86, of Meridian, passed away peacefully the afternoon of Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Poplar Springs Nursing Center.

Betsy was born to Clyde and Abbie (Culpepper) Harrison on August 1, 1939, in Montgomery, Alabama. Betsy married the love of her life, James “Jimmie” Thomas Garrett, Jr., and they were happily married for 54 years when Jimmie passed away in 2009.

Known as “Nanny” by most, she loved children, and they loved her. She was employed at Northeast Lauderdale Schools for 16 years and loved being recognized by students who had gone there. She loved attending their baseball and soccer games no matter how hot or cold the weather was. Nanny also loved to cook for others. It did her so much good for people to come and eat at her house. She was known for her spaghetti and her wonderful cornbread dressing.

Nanny was, above all else, a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family was her world and she enjoyed every moment spent with them. Nanny left a sweet message to her family: “Most of all, I want my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to know that next to God, I love them the most”. Nanny will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, James T. “Jimmy” Garrett, III (Frances), John Phillip Garrett (Amy), Ben Clayton “Clay” Garrett (Jena), and Charles Scott Garrett (Alexa); her brothers, Dr. Clyde Harrison Jr. and Dr. Gene Harrison; five grandchildren, Sterling Garrett (Keith), Phillip Garrett (Bethany), Jacob Garrett, Chelsea Garrett, Colby Garrett; five great grandchildren, Will Garrett, Tyson Garrett, Tucker Garrett, Travis Garrett, and Luna Garrett; along with a host of nieces and nephews and beloved friends.

Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Abbie Harrison; her husband, Jimmie Garrett; brother, Charles Harrison; sister, Edna Hollingsworth; and her grandson, Hunter Garrett.

Visitation for Nanny will be held on Wednesday, November 26th from 10:00-11:00 am, at Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes-North. Funeral Services will follow in the chapel with Bro. Matthew Hall officiating the services. Nanny will be laid to rest next to her beloved Jimmie in Magnolia Cemetery.

Serving as Pallbearers for Nanny's service will be Lamar King, Keith Garrett, Hunter Pearsel, Dan Brown, Garrett Wright, Eddie Entrekin, Jimmy Thompson, and Tommy Ainsworth.

The family would like to thank the staff and nurses of Poplar Springs Nursing Center for their kindness and loving care they gave to Nanny while she was there.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations to be made in Nanny’s honor to Andrew Chapel Church or to your favorite charity of choice.

The staff of Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes-North is grateful for the opportunity to honor Nanny’s life and memory and to serve her loving family during this time.
