Born in Cordele, Georgia, on January 21, 1928, Betty moved with her mother and father to Jacksonville in the early 1930s.
At an early age, she was baptized in Six Mile Creek which runs beside Edgewood Cemetery, and as a teenager she was a member of a quartet that sang in area churches.
In her early teens, Betty worked at a community grocery store. After graduating from Andrew Jackson High School in 1945, she worked for Duval Laundry where she met her husband. She worked for the Charter Company in Jacksonville for over 20 years.
Betty and Vernon were excellent parents to their five children, providing them with a loving home and an excellent foundation upon which to build. She attended church regularly with the children and read the Bible in the home to reinforce Christian values.
Betty joined Hilliard First Assembly of God after moving from Jacksonville to Hilliard in 1990, and Vernon joined thereafter. She was a faithful member of her church choir for many years, whether singing with the group or singing solos. A knowledgeable student of the Bible, she taught the ladies' Sunday School class for many years, and she volunteered several years of service in the church office.
She had many ways of showing her love and care for those around her, including baking delicious lemon Jello cakes and cheesecakes which her family and friends always looked forward to and will always remember. Her granddaughters loved growing up next door to her and helping care for her. As a young child her grandson Gary referred to her as "The Mom," so her children later nicknamed her T.M.
Besides her church, her family and her friends, Betty dearly loved Psalm 91, music and singing, her country and its history, the mountains, red birds and hummingbirds, and yellow flowers. She was an intelligent, compassionate and courageous woman.
This dedicated servant of God, loving mother and faithful friend will be greatly missed.
A viewing and services for Betty will be held at Hilliard First Assembly of God on Saturday, March 1st, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with Reverend Arlie Johns officiating. Betty will be laid to rest beside her husband at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville immediately following.
