Betty Jane Hoffer

Betty Jane (Haman) Hoffer, 99, passed away Sunday, November 9 at Hampton Manor of Bedford. She was born June 21,1926 in Monroe to Anton and Allison (Davey) Haman. She attended Monroe Public Schools and was a lifelong resident of Monroe. Betty married her high school sweetheart, William B. Hoffer April 7, 1943 in Monroe. They celebrated 67 years of marriage before his death on May 13, 2010.
Betty and her husband, Bill, were proud supportive parents and actively participated in their daughters' activities while the girls were growing up. Betty frequently volunteered for a variety of school and community organizations, and was a Bluebird and Campfire Girl leader for many years. From 1979–1988 Betty volunteered at Monroe Mercy Memorial Hospital.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren and following their sports and music activities. She traveled extensively in the United States, as well as Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. She first began bowling in 1989 in the Monroe senior co-ed and women's bowling leagues. Over the next twelve years she won several individual and team awards. Betty was particularly proud that she rode her bicycle 10 or more miles a day and walked 2 miles a day until she was 90 years old. She liked to garden in her yard and sported a huge smile when neighbors told her she had the nicest yard in the neighborhood. Betty was a sweet, kind lady with a positive outlook and a winning personality. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
She is survived by 3 daughters Barbara (Eugene) Greutman of Lambertville, Patricia (Henry) Hudson of Monroe, Nancy (Robert) Brenton of Petersburg; her brother Eugene (Mary) Haman of Monroe; 3 grandchildren Chad (Kimberly) Greutman of St. Clair Shores, Ryan (Susan) Greutman of South Bend, IN, and Kathryn (Adam) Ginsburg of Ann Arbor; and 14 great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by daughter Jacquelyn (George) Miller in 1990 and sister Janice (Charles)Watson in 2024.
A visitation will be held on Monday, Nov. 17th from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe.
