Betty Adelia Nyman was born in Maiden Rock, Wisconsin, on December 29, 1928, and spent her early childhood there. In her teen years, her family relocated to Ellsworth, Wisconsin, where she graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1946, having even been crowned Homecoming Queen.
Betty attended nurses' training at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, Illinois. It was there that she met the love of her life, Ned Nyman. They married in 1950 and soon began their family. Their first two children, Ned and Nancy, were born in Oak Park, when Ned received orders from the Navy and they were sent to Monterey, California. While living in the Monterey area, they welcomed their third child, Jayne. After two wonderful years on the West Coast, the family moved to Clarendon Hills, Illinois, where their fourth child, Bill, was born.
A few years later, they settled in Hinsdale, Illinois, where Betty and Ned built a rich and vibrant life for their family and remained until 1985. Seeking sunshine, golf, and new adventures, they added a winter home in Tucson, Arizona, and kept their summer home in Michigan. The next 20 years were spent building cherished friendships and joyful memories. In 2007, Betty and Ned left the "snowbird" life and found a warm and loving community at Windsor Park in Carol Stream, IL.
Betty loved music deeply. She played the baritone in high school, enjoyed the piano, and delighted in singing old hymns – continuing to play well into her 80s. Her faith in Jesus shaped everything she did. She served faithfully at Hinsdale Covenant Church, especially during the beloved House of Christmas events, where she joyfully contributed homemade ornaments and thousands of Swedish cookies and treats.
Hospitality was one of Betty's greatest gifts. If you walked past her apartment, she was ready to welcome you in for coffee, tea, and of course a cookie or sweet treat -- served at her dining table, often on her best China. If she knew you, she wanted to know you more deeply. If she didn't know you yet, she was eager to begin. Betty made people feel valued. She cared deeply, listened intently, and made sure everyone she encountered knew they mattered.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents William and Edith Nelson, Arnie Nelson (brother), Lucy Strom (sister), and Ned (2020), her beloved husband of 69 years. She is survived by her four children; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one more great-grandchild on the way. She remembered each one, praying for them by name with love and devotion.
She will be greatly missed by her family, her dear friends from every season of her life, and her treasured friends and caring staff at Windsor Park, each of whom became a meaningful part of her community and her story.
We thank God for her life, her love, her prayers, and the countless ways she reflected His kindness and faithfulness.
There will be a private service at Windsor Park in Carol Stream, IL and a memorial and celebration of Betty's life in Lund, Wisconsin in the summer of 2026.
