Betty Sardelis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Martinson Funeral Home from Jun. 2 to Jun. 5, 2025.
Betty J. Sardelis
Died April 24, 2025
Betty J. Sardelis was born in 1938 in Detroit, Michigan. Betty was a first-generation American, the daughter of Frank and Sophia, who immigrated from Slovenia. She received a full scholarship to the University of Michigan where she earned her Bachelor's and Master's degree in Library Science, and graduated at the top of her class. She met Tom, her husband of 54 years, in French class while attending the University of Michigan. Betty was the Head Librarian at Huron High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, while her husband Tom completed his medical degree at the University of Michigan.
Betty studied art history at the University of Michigan and was a docent for the Toledo Museum of Art. Betty and Tom enjoyed traveling to Europe, visiting museums and appreciating the local cuisine. She enjoyed going to the Chicago Lyric Opera House with her family, singing in the choir and playing the flute. Betty owned, rode, and jumped horses as long as her strength and health permitted. Betty and Tom were fanatical about Scrabble and Michigan football.
Betty is survived by her son Tom, (Christina), daughter Ann, (David), and her five grandchildren Costa, Athena, Aleko, Soren, and Rowan; her sister Vicky Matievich, and her nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Thomas N. Sardelis (2015).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to the Toledo Museum of Art in her memory.
A graveside service will be held at 12 p.m on Friday, June 13th at the Leelanau Township Cemetery in Northport.
Please share condolences and memories with Betty's family at www.martinson.info.
