Betty Whittington Obituary
Betty Whittington, 86, of Columbus, passed away peacefully at 3:01 a.m. Monday, November 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at the Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana inpatient facility.
Betty was born December 4, 1938, in Edmonton, Kentucky, the daughter of the late William and Dorothy England. She lived a life marked by kindness, resilience, and deep devotion to her family.
She married Carl Whittington in 1965. He preceded her in death in 2011. Together they raised four children: Richard, Cathy, Patricia, and Mark.
Betty worked for several local businesses in Columbus and retired after many years as Branch Manager of the Cummins Credit Union. She was a woman of strong faith whose compassion and warmth were felt by all who knew her. Her home-and especially her kitchen table-was a gathering place for family and friends, where she offered comfort, conversation, and her beloved banana pudding.
Survivors include her children, Richard W. (Joanna Shepherd) Fields, Cathy A. (Fred) Leamnson, and Patricia D. Fields, all of Columbus; grandchildren, Lindsay (Benjamin Goltz) Fields-Goltz, Matthew N. (Gina Vaia) Fields, Theodore Shepherd, Sophia Shepherd, Aleksei Fields, Elizaveta Fields, Jeremy R. (Amanda) Fields, Jason D. Leamnson, Richard D. (Melissa) Reeves, Jonathan M. (Shelby) Rowe, and Kristina D. (Jeremy) Bryant; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her sister, Jeanette Ferrenburg, of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; her son, Mark L. Fields; her sister, Wanda Coy; and her brothers, Roger England and Lester England.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, November 21, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home, Washington Street, with Pastor Tim Perkins officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.
