Beverly was a colleague, a friend, and most of all, a mentor. I admired her tenacity , especially as one of the first female professors at the College of Journalism at UGA in the mid-1970s. She was devoted to her students and took time to know them, as well as to teach them. My sincere sympathy to her family and friends. She was a remarkable teacher and an amazing woman.

Whether Bev was lecturing 300 students in a campus auditorium or coaching a dozen in the photojournalism lab, she was a consummate teacher. Engaged, knowledgeable, affable.

She was also a progressive ally, striving to move the journalism program forward.

Mid-career, she earned her doctorate so she could secure her faculty position and continue supporting her family.

She appeared demure, but was resolute-especially on feminist issues.

She earned respect and admiration.

Without a doubt, Dr. Bethune was one of my favorite teachers at the UGA J-School, and she had a profound impact on my career. I will always treasure the days in her class. Condolences to her family. I'm sure I'm just one of zillion people whose life she changed.
