I frequently think fondly of Bev Bullen and Jane McArthur because I owe them so much when it comes to my career. I am still studying the physiology of the menstrual cycle! All those I worked with during grad school at Boston University, including Gary Skrinar, were wonderful people and I am grateful to have had the opportunities I did while attending BU.

My mother, Betty Singleton Dove and Bev grew up together in South Shore. I heard many stories about their childhood antics. Bev was a very special woman.

My mother Betty Dove and Bev were lifelong friends

I remember Bev as an early teacher in my doctoral program at Boston University. Myself and several other female graduate students were subjects in the initial pilot to study the effect of exercise on the menstrual cycle. Bev was always a kind and welcoming presence to the students. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and close friends.

Beverly, Bev, Beaver, was my first best friend.
In the 80's, when Bev had her hip surgery, I was 6 or 7 years old, and her next door neighbor. I 'got to' help her with vacuuming, laundry, cooking, etc for a few months.
And I do mean got to. As anyone reading this knows, any time with Bev was precious, even a 6 year old knew that... (My parents wouldn't let Bev pay me more than $2 a week.)
Over the next ten plus years, Bev taught me about horticulture, she and I gardened hour upon hour,
built the best compost pile in Dedham, tended the gorgeous Japanese Maple that still stands, raked up dog wood petals from her front lawn, got cut up by holly bushes.
She taught me how to swim, the back stroke, breast stroke, side stroke...
Taught me to throw a frisbee.
Bev told me stories of China and Antarctica, and Blue Mountain Lake, introduced me to her family, let me crash her dinner parties...
Before I was 10, I was 'hanging out' with Beverly Bullen and Janet MacArthur... (I didn't have to know the level of genius around me.)
I didn't realize, at the time, the education I was getting. I just loved being around Bev, she treated me as an equal, as a friend.
I owe Bev more than I can express here.
I'm as lucky as one can get. Bev was my best friend. :)

Bev was on of my mentors in grad school. She, Janet McArthur, and Gary Skrinar helped me tremendously while in the program and inspired me to stay in academia and research. I am still studying the menstrual cycle because of their efforts. Bev's energy and kindness were pervasive and she was a true pioneer and wonderful person. My thoughts are prayers are with her family and friends.

I send my condolences to my Big Sis' family. On my arrival at BU in 1978 we had an almost immediate connection with our physical education backgrounds. We were colleagues for almost 25 years and collaborated on research for most of those years. She was a true mentor for her 'Little Brother'...as she referred to me. I will miss her and her never ending smile.
