Kay was born in Chicago, Illinois to Clarence and Ursula "Alice" Thompson, 1 of 6 children. Kay was raised in Markham, Illinois. She graduated high school, then worked in graphic design in her early years in Chicago area. Kay was a true artist and loved painting and art with no formal education in that field.
She married at 19, to Clarence Lyke and the two started their family with the addition of 4 children, Marty, Jeff, Pam, and Karen. Life took Kay and Clarence down different roads and they eventually separated. She found love again in Crete, Illinois While she worked as a waitress, she met a handsome policeman named John "Jack" W. Bishop. They married on December 10, 1966, and raised a blended family of 6 kids together.
Kay and Jack moved to Florida in 1978. They were the owners and operators of Smilin Jacks Marina in Jupiter building it into a successful business. As the business thrived Kay soaked in the many scenic and beautiful days on the water in Jupiter and often used those images as her muse for her paintings. Kay was an excellent artist and teacher becoming a renowned local artist. Anyone who remembers the painting "Jupiter Moon" knows there is a funny story behind it.
