Bhagirath Natwerlal Shah
Bhagirath Natwerlal Shah (August 14, 1940 - December 15, 2025), a devoted husband, father, grandfather, entrepreneur and the steadfast pillar of his family, passed away peacefully on Dec. 15, 2025. Born on Aug. 14, 1940, in Gujarat, India, Bhagirath lived a life defined by resilience, integrity, and quiet greatness — leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations.
His strength was forged early. At just seven years old, Bhagirath lost his mother, a profound loss that shaped his character. Even in childhood, he rose with remarkable maturity, helping to care for and guide his two younger sisters, Veena and Harsha. This early sense of responsibility became a hallmark of his life. Gifted with sharp intellect and unwavering determination, he earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Baroda at the young age of 19.
In 1965, Bhagirath made a brave decision to marry the love of his life, Indumati C. Patel. Defying the expectations of their families and the cultural norms of the time, the two chose one another wholeheartedly and eloped — guided by conviction, love and mutual respect. Their marriage, born of courage and devotion, became a lifelong partnership and the unshakable foundation of their family and future.
Bhagirath began his professional career at Alembic Pharmaceuticals in Baroda, where he gained invaluable experience and confidence. Guided by courage and a pioneering spirit, he immigrated to the United States in 1970 in pursuit of opportunity and a better life for his family.
Settling in Connecticut, Bhagirath worked diligently at Danbury Pharmaceuticals from 1970 to 1979, living simply with Induben and their young daughter and sons, guided always by hope and perseverance. Inspired by the success of fellow Indian immigrants and driven by an entrepreneurial vision, Bhagirath, along with his brother-in-law P.C. Amin, entered the motel industry.
Their journey began in Lumberton, where Bhagirath operated an Econo Lodge. Though he entered the industry with little prior experience and faced many early challenges, his tireless work ethic, integrity and determination transformed obstacles into success. Over time, his efforts grew into a respected and highly regarded hotel enterprise — an enduring testament to his belief that honest work, courage and perseverance yield lasting rewards.
Above all achievements, Bhagirath's greatest pride was his family. He lived by example, instilling in his children and grandchildren the values of education, humility, kindness and resilience. He was known for his generous spirit, gentle wisdom and deep respect for all people, regardless of background. To many, he was not only a mentor and provider, but a source of quiet strength and unwavering love.
Bhagirath is survived by his beloved wife, Indumati; his children Anju, Jay (Vineeta), and Alkesh; his cherished grandchildren Nikhil, Jessica, Maya, Kaiya and Elina; and his dear sister Harsha. He leaves behind a family profoundly shaped by his values and a legacy of love, perseverance and dignity.
Though his presence will be deeply missed, Bhagirath Natwerlal Shah's life stands as a powerful reminder that courage, integrity, and love — when chosen with conviction — can transcend boundaries and shape generations. His story will continue to guide and inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
