Big Jim Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Coastal Cremations and Funeral Care - Zephyrhills Chapel on Feb. 5, 2026.
James John Weiss, Sr., affectionately known to many as "Big Jim," passed away peacefully in Zephyrhills, Florida on February 5, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on July 13, 1941, in Lake, Michigan, he lived a life full of adventure, service, and joy.

Big Jim was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Carolyn "Carol" Weiss, with whom he shared 64 wonderful years of marriage. A loving father to his son, James John Weiss, Jr., and daughter, Deb Ackiss, Jim was also the cherished brother of Toni Donohue and Lorrie Weiss. His legacy extends through his grandchildren, Carol (Troy) Taylor, Dave Ackiss, Jr., Aaron (Tata) Weiss, Ryan (Katie) Weiss, Nick (Crystal) Weiss, Brittany Weiss, and Brianna Cross, as well as his great-grandchildren, Jo, Kellam, Layna, Lilly, Caiden, Beckham, and Michael.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard from July 1959 until his retirement in August 1980. Following his military service, he worked as a bus driver and mechanic, where his skills and dedication left a lasting impact on those he encountered.

A man of boundless energy and varied interests, Big Jim could often be found on the golf course or bowling alley, cigar in hand, savoring the camaraderie of friends and family. He enjoyed reading and was known for his talent as a handyman, never one to sit still for long.

Jim was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dade City and held lifelong memberships with both the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the Moose Lodge Fraternity, where he formed lasting friendships and made significant contributions to his community.

In accordance with his wishes, no public services will be held. Those who knew and loved him will forever remember his larger-than-life presence, infectious laughter, and unwavering love for his family and friends.

Big Jim's memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his spirit will remain a guiding light in the hearts of those he leaves behind. Rest in peace, dear Jim, your journey here may be over, but your legacy lives on.
