Bill Schroeder Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home on Dec. 31, 2025.
William Dale "Bill" Schroeder passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at his home in Tell City. He was 77 years old.

He was born July 1, 1948, at Fort Bragg Military Base in North Carolina, the son of the late Richard F. "Dick" and Mary G. (Mullen) Schroeder. In addition to his parents, Bill was also preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Lee Bolin.

Bill graduated from Tell City High School in 1966. He served in the United States Marine Corps for four years during the Vietnam Era, attaining the rank of Sergeant. During his service, stationed in Washington, DC, he was selected for presidential detail for President Richard Nixon. Bill also enjoyed participating in Marine sports, including softball and volleyball. During his working career, he was employed in the coal mines with Peabody Coal Company.

Bill was united in marriage to JoAnn Cravens on March 26, 1988. He was an accomplished bowler, achieving five perfect games of 300. He also loved playing cards-especially euchre and poker-and was very good at both. Many family gatherings found the Schroeder's gathered around a card table.

Later in life, Bill took great joy in watching his children and especially his grandchildren participate in sports. He was always there to support them in whatever they pursued. Family was extremely important to Bill, and he cherished gatherings that included horseshoes, cornhole, and an occasional washer game or two. His memorial weekend outdoor gatherings created many treasured memories.

Bill also enjoyed camping, horseback riding, and spending time doing activities with his wife. He never met a stranger-if someone wasn't a friend when they met him, they were by the time they parted.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, JoAnn Schroeder of Tell City, children, Andy (Heather) Schroeder of Tell City, Aaron (Carla) Schroeder of Waverly, KY, Kevin Wood of Tell City, and Carrie (D.J.) Dietrich of Boonville, brother, Wayne (Elizabeth) Schroeder of Owensboro, grandchildren, Rylie Schroeder, Drew Schroeder, Nathan (Jon Benet) Wood, Gabriel (Leah) Wood, Zachary Dietrich, Xavier Dietrich, Austin Schroeder, Corey Schroeder, Matthew Schroeder, and Koleby Schroeder, and 2 great-grandchildren, Natalie Wood and McKenna Wood.

Services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, January 10, 2025, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10:00am until service time at the funeral home with Pastor Jack Masterson officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Troy, Indiana.
