William Lee "Bill" Simmons, a man of courage and intellect, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025, at the age of 91 in
Dublin, Georgia. Born on February 6, 1934, in
Omega, Georgia, Bill was a beacon of strength and wisdom for all who knew him. His journey began as the son of the late William Autice Simmons and Mildred Conger Simmons, and he grew to become a pillar in his community, cherished by family and friends alike.
Bill's early education took place at Omega High School, where he graduated in 1952. He not only excelled academically but also left his mark on the sports field and within the Future Homemakers of America organization. His pursuit of higher education led him to Norman Jr. College, where he graduated in 1954. Bill's college years were highlighted by his active participation on the basketball team, showcasing his competitive spirit and teamwork.
In 1956, Bill entered a new chapter of his life by joining the United States Air Force. His service to his country was characterized by dedication and honor, with a four-year tenure in Germany before receiving an honorable discharge while stationed in Bangor, Maine. This period of his life was a testament to his unwavering patriotism and commitment to excellence.
Upon returning to civilian life, Bill embarked on a distinguished career as an engineer and surveyor consultant with the Georgia Department of Transportation. His expertise and meticulous work ethic were instrumental during his tenure in both the Chatham County and Emanuel County offices. His retirement marked the end of a successful career that left a lasting impact on the infrastructure and development of his beloved home state.
Bill's personal life was Godly filled with love and devotion. He was a preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Helen Proctor Simmons. Tragically, he was also preceded in death by his son Gregory Simmons, and his daughters Patricia Meeler and Denise Lorenz. His legacy lives on through his son, Terry Simmons (Tim Heath), and daughter, Dawn Simmons Gaddis (Bob). His grandchildren, Maci Robinson (Taylor), Cody Simmons (Natalie), Shira Simmons, Kristen Gaddis Conley (Mason), and Benjamin Heath-Simmons, as well as his great-grandchildren, Zahra Wade Simmons, Calliope Aiko Simmons, Maven Aleise Conley, Wyatt Atlas Simmons, and Reese Fererra Freeman, will carry forward the values and lessons he imparted. Bill is also survived by his brother, Jerry Simmons (Debbie), his nephews, great-nephews, and Romel Tillery Smith, the mother of his children.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 3, 2026 at the Mary Whitaker Townsend Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bobby Hutto officiating.
