Funeral services for Billie WANDA Atkinson 91, will be held on Monday, June 3, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Southside Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana. Burial will follow at Centuries Memorial Park Cemetery, 8801 Mansfield Rd. in Shreveport. Visitation will precede the service at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Officiating the service will be Pastor Rusty Lester.
Wanda was born April 8, 1933, in Logansport, LA, to Charles Harris and Ozella Brown Harris, and passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024, in Bossier City.
Over her life, Wanda could often be found in a comfy chair deep in the storyline of a good book. It is estimated, starting at the age of eight, reading an average of two books a week, that in her 90+ years, she has read over 8,000 books. Wanda was a dedicated employee of Blanchard, Walker, Oquin and Roberts for 51 years upon her retirement at age 75. She enjoyed playing bridge with friends, card games with her grandkids in their weekly visits growing up and was always up for a competitive game of Chinese Checkers for those who dared to try and beat her. Her walls, bookshelves, and boxes were filled with pictures of her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. The family will have lasting memories of her homemade white icing, Neiman Marcus cake, sugar cookies and Christmas trash. Wanda always had a story to tell. She told stories of her childhood caring for her siblings, of her travels with her best friends, Keat and Silvia, working for her boss, Mr. Roberts, or the latest sport accomplishments of her great-grandchildren. She had a sharp, determined mind, a love for dancing and making her family laugh, a strong will, and a heart that never left you wondering how much she loved you. Her favorite saying and something we know to be true was, “All you have to do is talk to the good Lord, and He would make everything ok.” She will be missed by those that knew her and forever loved deeply by those that got to call her MOM, GRANNIE, SISTER and FRIEND.
Wanda was preceded in death by husband, Edwin Robert Atkinson; parents, Charles Harris and Ozella Brown Harris; stepmom, Violet Harris; brothers, Julius Harris, Don Harris, and Buddy Harris; nephews, John Wesley Harris, and Chucky Lester.
Wanda and Edwin “ED” Atkinson were married 45 years until his passing in 1996. They had one child, and she is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Atkinson Good and husband, John Good Jr. , two grandkids, Kristal Patterson and husband, Robert, Faith Wojcik and husband, Christian; six great-grandchildren, Paris, Champ, Bob, Silas, Maxx, and Juliette; one sister, Mary Lester; and many nephews, nieces, and friends.
Honoring Wanda as pallbearers will be Christian Wojcik, Robert Patterson, Champ Endris, Bob Patterson, Silas Endris and Paul Endris.
The family wants to thank every single staff member at Pilgrim Manor who loved and cared for her over the past few weeks in her journey home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Pilgrim Manor Nursing and Rehab, 1524 Doctors Dr., Bossier City, Louisiana, 71111.
