Billy "Shorty" Goens

Billy M. "Shorty" Goens, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on September 2, 2025, at My Michigan Standish Hospital. Born on May 7, 1936, in Paw Paw, Michigan, to the late Robert and Edith (Mitchell) Goens, Shorty was a man whose presence was as memorable as his nickname.
Shorty grew up in Paw Paw and later moved to Clio, where he dedicated many years of service at the GM Flint Buick plant. After retiring, he settled in the Omer area, where he became a well-known figure among the Rifle River community. His love for fishing, particularly on the opening day of sucker dipping on April 1st, was well-known and shared with many special friends along the Rifle River.
A skilled mechanic, Shorty could fix cars and just about anything that needed repair. His handy nature was only surpassed by his friendly demeanor and loving heart. He was the kind of person who would offer help without hesitation and greet you with a smile that made you feel instantly at home.
Shorty's legacy lives on through his beloved children, Beatrice Tryon, William "Billie" Goens, Yvonne "Bonnie" Goens-Newcombe, Kenneth Goens, stepchildren Elizabeth, Kameo, Joel, Jerry & John. His grandchildren, Tom Tryon, Jeff Tryon, Nicole Newcombe, Billy Newcombe, and numerous great-grandchildren, will carry forward the memories of their adored grandfather.
He is survived by his siblings, Gordon, Jeanie, Marilyn, Sally, and Roberta, who will miss their brother's laughter and companionship. Shorty was predeceased by his son-in-law Tom and siblings Roger, Jackie, Joyce, and Mary. His absence will be deeply felt by his family, many special Rifle River friends, and countless others who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Shorty's life was a testament to the simple joys of companionship, the satisfaction of a job well done, and the enduring bonds of family. As we say goodbye to a man who was the epitome of handy, friendly, and loving, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Billy "Shorty" Goens will be remembered not just for the things he fixed, but for the lives he touched. His story is one of genuine connection, a life well-lived, and a legacy of love that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
