I MET BILLY & HIS LOVELY WIFE BARBARA ABOUT A YEAR BEFORE BILLY PASSED AWAY. HE AND THE BAND WERE PLAYING A 3 DAY VENUE AT AMERICAN GARDENS THEATER EPCOT. AFTER THE 2ND NIGHT OF THEIR 3 30 MINUTE SHOWS, I HAD ASKED BILLY'S WIFE BARBARA WHO SAT IN FRONT OF ME IF I COULD MEET HER HUSBAND? SHE SAID SHE WOULD ASK HIM, SO SHE DID AND HE WAS RIDING A RED SCOOTER, FOR THE PERFORMANCES WOULD WEAR HIM OUT DUE TO HIS DIABETES. HE WAS DRINKING FROM A WATER BOTTLE AS HE SAT ON HIS SCOOTER HUMBLY TELLING ME OF ALL THE PLACES HE AND THE GUYS HAD TOURED IN SINGING AROUND THE WORLD. HE SPOKE OF ALSO THE NOT SO NICE WAYS IN WHICH HE AND THE GUYS WERE TREATED BECAUSE OF THEIR COLOR. BUT BILLY NEVER SOUNDED BITTER, NEVER RAISED HIS VOICE, HE JUST TALKED WITH ME LIKE WE HAD KNOWN EACH OTHER FOR QUITE SOME TIME IN OUR LIVES. BARBARA HIS WIFE HAD FINALLY SAID "WE MUST BE GOING BACK TO HOLLY HILL TONIGHT" I SAID YOU MEAN YOU'RE NOT STAYING HERE ON PROPERTY? SHE REPLIED "NO, BILLY HAS TO GET HOME TO TAKE HIS DIALYSIS, THEN HE SPOKE UP IN TELLING ME HE HAD HIS OWN MACHINE IN HIS BEDROOM IN WHICH HE WAS ABLE TO HOOK HIMSELF UP TO, SO THAT HIS BODY WOULD BE FILTERED DURING THE NIGHT AS HE SLEPT. SO I ASKED BILLY & BARBARA IF I COULD GIVE THEM HUGS BY WHICH THEY AGREED, SO WE HUGGED AND SAID OUR SO LONGS, SEE YOU BOTH TOMORROW NIGHT FOR YOUR NEXT SET OF CONCERTS. THEN THE NEXT EVENING BARBARA WAS SITTING IN FRONT OF ME ONCE AGAIN, AND WE WERE CHATTING FOR A FEW MINUTES, THEN SHE SAID TO ME... "YOU KNOW BILLY MENTIONED YOU AS WE WERE DRIVING HOME, IN THAT HE SAID YOU WERE SO ATTENTIVE AND VERY KIND TOWARDS HIM IN WANTING TO KNOW AND LISTEN ABOUT HIS LIFE. HE WAS HAPPY TO HAVE MET YOU" SAID BARBARA. THEN I REPLIED TO HER, IT WAS AN HONOR AND I WAS VERY GRATEFUL FOR THE WINDOW OF TIME HE GAVE ME TO JUST SIT AND SPEAK WITH HIM, PLUS LISTEN TO ALL THE PLACES HE HAD BEEN THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER. To hear of my cousins passing was one of those pivotal moments in my life when it feels as if the whole world should pause. Pause in reflection of all the goodness and joy that Billy shared with us all. Fond memories of visits from him in my childhood in Detroit will always remain. He will never ever be forgotten and not only was I blessed with his presence, but so were many music fans, co-workers, relatives and friends. Although he will be missed, he left us so much and when I need to be lifted, I'll play his music and think of him blissfully on stage doing his "Rubberband Man" thang!

In our brief and small encounter, I learned many things. The memories will last forever.

To the Henderson family, may god bless you all. I've have some wonderful times with the Spinners. My brother played in the band. (David Brandon) and Billy was a great man. I remember the conversions we have regarding you writing a book.
