He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Margurite; his parents, Dave and Lucy Scott Hurst; brothers Marvin, Ben Jay, Jack, Shalar, Herman, Addison, and Ernie; and sisters Dorene, Irene, Thelma, Ova, and infant Clara.

A proud veteran, Billy served honorably in both the U.S. Navy from 1945–1946 and, later, in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950–1952. During his service, he was wounded in the upper leg and spent six months recovering at a Fort Campbell hospital, which brought his military career to a close.
Following his time in the service, Billy brought the same dedication to his civilian life. He worked for 30 years at Cadillac Motor Co. in Detroit, MI, where he served as a Quality Control Technician. He took great pride in his work and retired in March 1981, after which he and his wife, Marge, enjoyed many years together in Bradenton, FL. After her passing in April 2005, Billy returned home to Deer Lodge, TN, where he lived until his own passing.
