Charles Hicks Hefner, age 84, of the Altapass Community in Spruce Pine, N.C., entered his Heavenly home to be with the Lord on June 21, 2025, surrounded by his family. Mr. Hefner was born on July 25, 1940, to his parents Roy Hefner and Dora Lou Biddix Hefner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, JD Hefner and Franklin Hefner, and sisters, Bernice Calloway and Ruby Calloway.
He lived his entire life on his family's homeplace in Altapass, where he was raised and farmed as a boy. If asked where he lived, he would affectionately joke, "LA" (Lower Altapass). He loved the place he called home and worked diligently throughout his life to leave his family property to his children. Even a few weeks before his passing, Mr. Hefner could often be found on his tractor bush hogging or riding his side-by-side throughout his property. He never met a stranger, had a quick wit, and always had a joke or story to share. An avid reader, he passed his love of reading to his children. With a heart full of compassion, he consistently helped those less fortunate whenever he could.
Mr. Hefner came from a close-knit family and valued spending time with them above all else. A devoted father, he prioritized instilling his faith and values in his children. He took immense pride in his grandchildren and doted on them, creating lasting memories, especially during their spirited Rook matches. A graduate of Harris High School, Mr. Hefner played on the football and basketball teams. After graduation, he served in the United States Marine Corps. Upon returning home, he dedicated over 30 years to Carolina Power and Light Company. In retirement, he enjoyed working part-time at Sears in Spruce Pine alongside Danny Burleson. For many years, he volunteered as a coach for youth basketball and football in the Optimist League in Spruce Pine. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Spruce Pine.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 63 years, Patricia Reeves Hefner; his daughter, Terri Scott, and husband, Wayne, of Spruce Pine; his son, Chip Hefner, and wife, Jennifer, of Ocala, Fla.; grandchildren Andrew Scott, Avery, Marybeth, and Katie Hefner; sister Norma Duncan; brother Winston Hefner; and several nieces and nephews who were very dear to him.
Mr. Hefner will be deeply missed by his family, who cannot imagine life without him. They find comfort in knowing he is rejoicing in heaven and that they will be reunited one day.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Spruce Pine, with Pastor Rocky Branch officiating. Graveside burial will follow immediately at McKinney Gap Cemetery in Altapass. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Mitchell County and Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine for their exceptional care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, they request that donations be made to Hospice of Mitchell County.
