Billy Ray Smith, 83, of Marion, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2025 at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
A native of McDowell County, he was born May 4, 1942 to the late Lonnie Smith and Mae Flynn Smith. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Linda Boyd Smith.
An avid sports fan, Bill was particularly devoted to the UNC Tarheels and the New York Yankees. His enthusiasm extended beyond personal support; he was a member of the McDowell Titan Booster Club, where he was a faithful supporter of the athletic programs of the McDowell County schools. Bill also took great pride in farming which brought him much joy. His commitment to his community was reflected in his support for the McDowell County 4H Club. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army.
He is survived by three children, Marty Smith (Stephanie), Holly Smith (Craig Murdock), and Amanda Smith; seven grandchildren who lovingly called him “Ponypaw”, Zachary Smith, Savannah Wilson (Dylan), Alex Smith, Abby Calhoun, Cole Calhoun, Austin Murdock, and Ryan Murdock; and ten great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 6, 2025 from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Beam Funeral Service. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Snow Hill Cemetery with Pastor TJ Smith officiating.
