Birgit Weirick

WEIRICK, Birgit Maria, 77, passed away February 27, 2010. Mrs. Weirick was born May 6, 1932 in NorrkÂ"ping, Sweden to the late Nils Gunnar and Maria Sofia Edler. She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, John Thomas Weirick. She was born and raised in NorrkÂ"ping, and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from the local engineering college. As an engineer, she worked in the textile and beverage industries before taking a position at the Karolinska Institute, where she conducted cancer research. In the mid-1950s, Mrs. Weirick met her future husband while on vacation in Germany. Shortly thereafter, she immigrated to the U.S. and married John Thomas Weirick. As a mother and partner to her civil engineer husband, she established a warm and happy home for her family in Northern Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maine before his retirement in 1983 in Virginia Beach. In her second career as a homemaker, Birgit distinguished herself as a hostess, accomplished gardener and gourmand. Mrs. Weirick is survived by two daughters, Gunvor Weirick-Sacks and her husband, David, of Richmond and Ingrid Weirick Squires and her husband, Dave, of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by a son, Nils Thomas Weirick of Delray Beach, Fla., and his fianc‚e, Silvina Mar¡a Chain, of Buenos Aries, Argentina; four grandchildren, Stefanie Rebecca Sacks, Jeffrey Michael Sacks, Emily Maria Sacks and Thomas Christian Squires. She is also survived by her sister, Gunvor Dunge and her husband, Jerker; niece, Charlotte Dunge; and nephews, Herman and Patrik, all of Sweden. Mrs. Weirick was a longtime member of Our Saviour Evangelical Lutheran Church. A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Our Saviour Evangelical Lutheran Church by Pastor Lawrence Shoberg. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church, the employee fund at Atlantic Shores Nursing Home, or to a charity of one's choice. The family would like to express our deepest appreciation for the warm, loving and generous care our dear mother received by the Seaside staff at Atlantic Shores over the past four years.
