Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mission Park Funeral Chapels South, Cemeteries & Crematories on Jan. 23, 2026.
On Friday, January 16, 2026, Blas Castillo Herrera, lovingly known as Nicholas or Nick, was called home to be with the Lord far too soon.
Blas was born on February 3, 1960, to Maria Silvestra Castillo and Jose Herrera in Lagunillas, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. He later made
San Antonio, Texas his home, where he built a beautiful life and a lasting legacy.
Blas was married to his devoted wife of 44 years, Janie Eunice Herrera. He was a proud and loving father to his oldest child and only daughter, April Jean Herrera Carrillo (husband Robert Carrillo), and to his two sons, Miguel Angel Herrera (wife Madivel Herrera) and Francisco Javier Herrera (wife Brittany Herrera).
He was a cherished grandfather to ten grandchildren, listed from oldest to youngest: Lazareth Cristo, Ezekiel Kane, Xaivien Nicholas, Destiny Edubives (his only granddaughter), Jayden Miguel, Jordan Anthony, Uriah Adam, Lennox Raul, Ezra Nicolas, and Hector Hussle.
Blas was also one of seven siblings, listed in order by age: Marcelino (Alma), Hilaria (Santiago), Josefina (Miguel) , Juana (Tony), Gonzalo (Adela), Martin (Hilda) , Carmelo ( Sylvia). He is further survived by numerous extended family members and many dear friends.
By trade, Blas was a masonry laborer, but he was truly a jack of all trades-there was nothing he could not do. He spent his life helping others, showing kindness, generosity, and love through his constant acts of service. Our father could build a house with his bare hands-and he built several-or grill the best fajitas anyone had ever tasted, and everything in between.
Blas found his greatest joy in spending time with his family. He was an avid gardner who maintained a variety of fruit trees and generously shared his harvest with those in need. He loved listening to corridos, watching fútbol, barbecuing, and enjoying a cold Modelo. He also deeply loved his dogs, Daisy and Scrappy, who were more like children than pets to him.
His legacy of hard work, love, and selflessness will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Home – Main Chapel, with the Rosary recited at 6:30 p.m.
Funeral services will take place on Thursday January 29, 2026. Please meet at Mission Funeral Home at 8:30 to depart at 9:30 am to St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, located at 1314 Fair Avenue. Mass begins at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow immediately afterward at Mission Park Funeral Cemetery.
Guests are kindly asked to arrive at the funeral home prior to 9:30 a.m. to proceed together to the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to help offset funeral expenses and allow the family to lay their loved one to rest.
