Bob Davis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Evans Funeral Home - Houston on Mar. 30, 2026.
Robert Lane "Bob" Davis, 87, of Houston, Mo., passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, in St. Louis, surrounded by family. Born on Nov. 1, 1938, in Springfield, Mo., Bob was the son of Lane E. Davis and Frances L. Davis, who instilled in him a lifelong appreciation for community, hard work and storytelling.

Bob grew up in Houston and graduated from Houston High School in 1956. A talented writer from an early age, he pursued journalism at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, graduating in 1960. During his college years, he became a proud member of Sigma Nu fraternity, where he formed deep, lasting friendships that shaped his life personally and professionally. His connection to Mizzou continued through the years as a fan of its athletic teams, especially football.

After college, Bob returned to Houston and carried forward his family's legacy in local journalism by publishing the Houston Herald. His love for people made him a natural newspaperman - he truly never met a stranger. Bob possessed a remarkable ability to turn a phrase, capture a moment and bring stories - and the people behind them - to life.

Bob was also a lifelong entrepreneur. In addition to his work in journalism, he embarked on a successful second career in the cable television industry, developing and building several systems across south central Missouri. His vision and tenacity left a meaningful imprint on the region's communications landscape.

An avid outdoorsman, Bob found his greatest peace in nature. He loved fishing Missouri's clear waters, including the Big Piney River, and often reminisced about quail hunts in Texas County in the days when the birds were still plentiful. Time outdoors was not just a hobby for Bob - it was a part of his identity.

More than anything, Bob cherished his family. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jo Davis, of the family home in Springfield, Mo.; his daughter, Jennifer Davis and her husband Kevin O'Donnell of Kirkwood, Mo.; and his son Jeff Davis and his partner Marla Crimmins of Chesterfield, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter-in-law, Laura Sydney Davis, Jeff's wife.

One of Bob's most treasured roles in life was being "Pop" to his beloved grandchildren, Sinclaire and Lane, who brought him endless joy and pride.

Bob will be remembered for his warmth, humor, generosity and his gift for connecting with anyone he met. His legacy lives on in his family, his community and the countless stories - told and untold - that he helped shape.

A memorial service, under the direction of Evans Funeral Home in Houston, will be held Friday, April 24. A visitation is from 1 to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Houston, with a service to follow at the church at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bob's name are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, St. Louis Chapter: https://www.alz.org/greatermissouri, click "donate"
