Bob Friend

Bob pitched during my kid hood in the Chicago area and I´ve read a bit about his admirable life. Here´s an image of a beautiful 1953 Bowman baseball card I´ll be picking up soon. Regards ....

Bob Friend was my boyhood idol. I treasured his baseball cards, memorized his stats, and watched on TV whenever his starts were televisied. I wrote him several fan letters and he always answered with picture postcards and handwritten notes. Several years ago I wrote again, thanking him for the great memories, and once again, he replied with kindness. I doubt if even those who saw him in his prime realized what an outstanding pitcher he was. I pray all the goodness, comfort and mercy of the Lord Almighty be upon all of his family today, and in all the days to come.

I will always remember Bob Prince calling balls and strikes for the wonderful Warrior of the Pirate mound staff. Thanks for the memories.

Mr Friend was the starting pitcher for the first MLB game I ever attended (Sportsman's Park in St. Louis-Aug 1959). Seeing him that night made a baseball card come to life. Thank you for the memory!

In 1963 had the chance to see Mr. Friend pitch against Art Mahaffey in Phila at connie mack stadium. Both pitcers were wonderful and opened the eyes of an eight you old boy. Thank you Bob friend for this wonderful experience that I got a chance to see in person. You will be missed by many.

My sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Bob Friend Sr. As a Baseball fan, Bob Friend still has my deep admiration for his pitching success with some woefully poor Pirates teams. They called Bob a "workhorse", and it's not a misnomer. Today, he would be signed for at least $20mil per season. Not a single Bob Friend baseball card ever touched my bicycle spokes. Each and every card was a "keeper".

I wish to send condolences to Bob Friend, Jr. and his family. My Dad was Jake Pitler, 11 year 1st base coach of the Brooklyn Dodgers who knew his Dad, Bob, Sr. I was a golf fan and met Bob Jr. when he was an amateur golfer and told him of the relationship. We remained friends after he turned professional. When I would see Bob, Jr. at tournaments he was always congenial and glad to see me. He was a gentleman & I rooted for him. My Dad passed 2/3/68 & I know what its like to lose a great father and baseball player. I share the sadness with Bob, Jr.
