Oh Bob: so many unreturned emails since we ran into each other in Sacramento a year ago.

Tonight, with the rush of election night, I had hoped you were out helping Hillary somewhere. Instead I learn of your passing.

We were old friends going back to Democratic activism, the environmental battles of the 1980's, particularly the fight against offshore oil drilling, GLBT issues and AIDS.

I will never forget one state Democratic convention when you and Stan Hadden and I went bar hopping at Sacramento gay bars. Whata hoot. We were all in Democratic politics in our respective arenas. It seemed prefectly clandestine.

I am glad we had a chance, albeit brief, to reconnect. I'll miss you old friend.

Give Stan Hadden a good punchline. And all of our long lost friends. It must be quite the party up there.

We'll try to keep the fires burning.

I knew Bob so briefly in the 80s Sierra Club days. What a witty, fun, intelligent, passionate person he was! My favorite memory was Bob singing a song I wrote for him in the annual Follies. A political parody of "I'm an old cowhand," it had the line "And I've come out here just to set you straight." Bob's delivery, peering over his glasses, one eyebrow raised, was hysterical. And that's the way I will remember Bob.

He was a hero to the LBGTQ community. He was an articulate spokesperson on behalf of the disenfranchised, the environment, and the role of the Democratic party in advancing the civil rights of all. I honor his words, his courage, and his humor. He will be missed.
