Herbie was born on October 9, 1958, in Crystal Falls, Michigan, son of the late Leroy and Lorraine (Pivatto) Nylund. Herbie attended Forest Park High School, graduating with the class of 1977. He played golf and football in high school and was part of the Class D State Championship football teams in 1975 and 1976. Herbie worked alongside his family at their grocery store in Republic, Michigan, later becoming co-owners with his brother, Lee. The two brothers then opened Nylund Foods as a grocery store in Crystal Falls, Michigan in, 1991, later becoming Nylund Foods (Nylund Pasty).
He married Jacqueline Vassar on October 19, 1991, at the Christ United Methodist Church in Crystal Falls. The couple shared 32 years of marriage.
Herbie enjoyed coaching his daughter, Samantha, in basketball and going to her many sporting events, helping and watching his son, Rod, with his snowmobile water cross races, spending time with family and friends on the houseboat on Way Dam, taking many rides to camp and spending as much time as he could with his grandson, Gavin. Herbie participated in the Lion's Bass Fest canoe race, starting his first race at the age of 15 and has never missed a race in 50 years. He also participated in the Bass Fest Volleyball Tournament and the Men's Wop/Swede game. He played softball for the Amasa Hotel Bar and Crystal Falls Fire Department teams, and he participated in the Men's Basketball League on Wednesday nights. Herbie was a current member of the Rocky's Rollers Bowling Team and Crystal Falls Men's Golf League.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Nylund; one son, Rod Nylund, and one daughter, Samantha (Tyler) Fittante; one grandson, Gavin Fittante; his brothers, Kim (Tina) Nylund and Lee (Sal) Nylund, all of Crystal Falls; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
Herbie was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Lorraine Nylund; a brother, Rod Nylund; a nephew, Ricky Nylund; a best friend, Jimmy Fabbri; and many other special friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, from 10 AM until 1 PM at the Christ United Methodist Church with a funeral service to follow at 1pm at Christ United Methodist Church. Pastor Vicky Prewitt will officiate.
