I remember my grandmother showing me pictures of Bob and his brother when they were young, and telling us they were part of our California relatives. Her name was Frances Reid Riggio and was from Manalapan New Jersey. As the story was told to us, the California part of the family were related to Alfred Gilks (cinematographer) who was related to Frances Reids mother, Elizabeth Webb. Anyway, I followed Bobs career with pride and well wishes for my long lost cousin whom I imagined I would have loved playing baseball with as a kid, but dont think we ever did...though we may have met the family once? So, very sorry for the loss of Bob, our sympathy to our long lost California relatives.

Welch family, I was so excited when I learned that we bought a home down the street from your family. Little did I know I'd meet and become friends with Bob. Certainly not a "regular" guy,. but one with a heart of gold who cared deeply for his family and friends. I got to take him to the Cards/Lions game last year, and he brought flowers from his garden for my wife. Countless times he offered his Seal Beach house to us for vacation. I'll always remember him with fondness, and will miss him.

I wrote you a letter many years ago. I was 12 and I had just finished reading your book. My mother was an alcoholic and no one seemed to understand or care. You responded with words of encouragement. You gave me hope. 34 years later, my heart breaks as I learn of your passing.

We are shocked and sad to hear of Bobby's death! Joe and I knew him waaaaay back when he first started pitching for the Dodgers. He came to St. Louis and went to our sons elementary school as his share for that day! Bobby was so good with the kids and Ryan (our son) was literally infatuated with Bobby. This was before he and Mary Ellen were married. We got together with Mary Ellen and their 2 boys, seems like a zillion years ago. Joe and I would love to pay our respects at Bobby's funeral if it's public. Our condolences to your family!

Bob was one of the first players about my age that I really liked. The drama of the "Reggie" strike out was HUGE for me, even for an A's and Yanks fan. I learned to forgive him when he had those great years in Oakland. Rest in Peace, Bob, you made a difference.
