Bob Whitney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Berge Pappas Smith Chapel of Angels Funerals & Cremation - Fremont on Dec. 30, 2025.
Bob Whitney, a visionary radio programmer and television innovator, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025 at the age of 96. Born in Newton, Massachusetts, in 1929 to Don and Irene Whitney, Bob's remarkable journey through American broadcasting left a mark on both radio and television. He will be remembered and missed by his family and friends at the Carlton Senior Living Community in Fremont, California.

Bob's radio career began in 1947, launching him into a life devoted to the magic of music and the power of the airwaves. In 1958, as DJ and Program Director at KALL in Salt Lake City, he propelled the station to the top of the ratings with a groundbreaking Top 40 format.

Bob's career flourished at KBOX in Dallas, where he competed against established giants and introduced inventive programming techniques, such as echo buttons that gave DJ's a larger-than-life presence. He was a keen judge of talent, notably recruiting legendary DJ Dan Ingram to lead the Dallas morning show. Promoted to National Program Director, Bob went on to transform WIL in St. Louis into a dominant Top 40 powerhouse, assembling a staff of future legends and cementing his legacy as a master of format innovation.

In 1970, Bob's passion for progress led him beyond radio to create The Now Explosion, a syndicated television series that aired in Atlanta and became a forerunner to MTV. With its blend of music videos and psychedelic effects, The Now Explosion introduced audiences to a new way of experiencing music on television.

A champion of progressive thinking, Bob relished spirited debate and was always eager to push boundaries whether by discovering fresh radio talent or experimenting with radio. His belief in the transformative power of broadcasting inspired all who knew him.

Bob was married to Florence and was the proud father of six devoted children. His family and friends celebrate a life defined by creativity, the pursuit of new ideas, and an unwavering love of radio.

We are especially grateful to the compassionate team at Carlton Senior Living Community, where Bob was cared for with kindness and dignity. Each day, a dedicated group of caregivers and staff made his life brighter and more comfortable. To all the members of the Carlton Senior Living Community who made a meaningful difference in Bob's life, our family will always remember their dedication and kindness with deep gratitude.
