Bobbie L. Avery

It is hard to put into words what Mrs. Avery meant to me. She came into my life when I was a freshman at John F. Kennedy High School. Now, at 46, I can say without a doubt that her presence left a lifelong impact. Mrs. Avery was the cool, fly teacher, the teacher everyone admired. She had style, grace, and a powerful presence. She made you want to be your best. Beyond her outward charm, she was a true light, always positive and encouraging. She created a space where students were able to speak freely without fear of judgment, where feedback was constructive and kind, but came with accountability. Though she was my mentor in high school, she became so much more. She was a trusted friend, a lifelong supporter, and a voice of wisdom. We remained in touch after I graduated in 1996, and even up until a month ago, our conversations were still full of warmth, laughter, and guidance. I will miss being able to pick up the phone and hear her voice. More than anything, I will carry her legacy, her strength, her style, her love, and the light she poured into me and so many others at JFK. Thank you, Mrs. Avery, for everything. You will always be with me, and I will always love you. My sincere condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all who loved her. She will be missed dearly. Bobbie was a professional in every way, but more than that she was beautiful inside and out. She was a sweetheart that would help me if I had any computer challenges. I pray you can hold fast to the memories. She meant so much to her JFK family. -Tim Pykare
