Bobby Ray Barnes, Sr., 83, of Marion, passed away Thursday evening, February 22, 2024 at Charles George VA Medical Center with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Rutherford County on September 29, 1940 to the late Paul Barnes, Sr. and Esther Parker Barnes. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Barnes; and one brother, Danny Barnes.
Bobby was a longtime member of East Marion Baptist Church. He was a very faithful and generous church member who loved his church very much. He met his late wife of 45 years, Elaine, while they both served in the United States Navy. He was so proud of his military service, and he enjoyed sharing stories of his military travels. He was employed for over 30 years at East Marion Manufacturing. Bobby was also a licensed electrician. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. His special canine companion, Bear, meant the world to him. He was the oldest of nine siblings, all of whom he loved dearly. Mr. Barnes will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his three children, Bobby Barnes, Jr. (Chip), Denise Jackson (Ken), and Cinda McAlum (Rick); six grandchildren, Amber Baughman (Brandon), Chris Carter (Keely), Ashlie McAlum (James), Courtney McAlum, Daniel Jackson (Alexandria), and Anna Jackson (Thomas); seven great grandchildren and one on the way, Gage Carter, Weston Baughman, Sebastian McAlum, Adylyn Stockton, James Stockton, Joseph Stockton, and Chloe Stockton; seven siblings, Richard Barnes (Cathy), Martha Edwards (Howard), Phyllis Patton, Paul Barnes, Jr, (Penny), Cathy Bunn (Chuck), George Barnes (Debbie), and Elaine Turner (Ray); and a special friend, Peggy Sisk.
A memorial service with military honors rendered by the United States Navy will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at East Marion Baptist Church with Rev. Andrew Walker. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Burial will be at McDowell Memorial Park at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Asheville VA Health Care System with donations marked for Hospice.
