Bobby Matthews Sr.

Bobby Matthews, 85, of Spring Lake, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

He was born on April 16th, 1940 to the late Melvin and Gertie Belle Matthews and was the second youngest of 7 children.

Bobby is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Joyce Crenshaw Matthews; son, Bobby Matthews Jr. (Shelly); daughter, Carolyn "Joy" Cayton (Marty); grandchildren, Jaron Cayton (Sarah), Tyler Matthews (Helen), Todd Matthews (Jess), Jed Cayton (Courtney), Jenna Cayton, Twila Mason (Christian), Jocelyn Ferger (Harrison), Tori McLamb (Devin). Bobby was a great "Granddaddy" to seven; Elliot, Wesley, Miles, Harper, Worth, Sloane, and Clark. His surviving siblings whom he was close with; George and Lena. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers (Waymond, EB, and Larry), and his sister (Eva).

Bobby loved his family and was proud of their character and faith in the Lord.

He served in the Airforce then ran Bobby's Soda Shop with his brother Larry for 20 years. At various times he ran a sporting goods store, umpired baseball and softball, and delivered milk. He finished his career with the United States Post Office after 25 years.

Bobby was known as a man dedicated to his faith and service to the Lord. He was a charter member of Liberty Baptist Church and faithfully led the church bus ministry for many years. He was diligent in inviting anyone to church regardless of who they were or where they came from: all were welcome.

A self-proclaimed country boy, he loved being outdoors and in his garden. If he wasn't at home, at church, or at a ball game, he was likely to be found in the woods, fishing, or in his garden. His garden was a way to care for others. He felt a deep responsibility to care for those in need.

Bobby was quick to help others and share his faith. You always knew when he was headed your way because you could hear him singing constantly. He was a loving and kind man, who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services to celebrate Bobby's life will be held Sunday, March 1, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Liberty Church in Spring Lake. Visitation will be held for friends and family after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations in Bobby's honor to Liberty Church Children's Ministry.
