Reverend Dr. Boyce Whitman
Six Mile, SC
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Reverend Dr. Boyce David Whitman, who left this world peacefully on November 3, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on August 28, 1940, in Easley, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Henry D. and Lula Revis Whitman.
He dedicated his life to serving the Lord and his community.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His devotion to his family was unparalleled, and he cherished every moment spent with his loving wife, Doris, his children Greg, Terreca, and Sheila, as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Meeting Jesus was his ultimate desire, and he faithfully encouraged everyone to seek the saving grace of his Lord and Savior.
For an incredible 64 years, Boyce served as the pastor of Gap Hill Baptist Church in Six Mile, where his passion for ministry shone brightly. Additionally, he worked for over 25 years as an Electrical Engineer at Sangamo Electric Co. in Pickens, embodying a true servant's heart that extended far beyond his church and workplace. He was blessed with opportunities to share his deep faith across many states and even internationally, training more than 100 pastors in the Dominican Republic. For 45 years, he also taught at Southern Baptist School for Biblical Studies out of Jacksonville, Fl empowering countless others to spread the gospel.
Boyce was a jack of all trades and a master of many, always eager to lend a hand. Whether building ramps for church members, ministering to the homeless, or working alongside missionaries, he was a constant source of help and encouragement. As a cancer survivor since 2015, his resilience and love for others never wavered, continually inspiring those around him.
Boyce and Doris began their beautiful journey together in 1957, and their love was a testament to Christ's love for the church, a love that flourished as they partnered in ministry, family life, and service to others. They exemplified a unique bond that will be remembered by all who knew them.
Those left to celebrate his homegoing are his wife of 68 years, Doris Whitman; a son, Greg Whitman (Beverly) and daughters, Terreca Merck (Rev. Billy Ray) and Sheila Craig (Danny); grandchildren, Rev. J.D. Whitman (Grace), Rev. Jeremy Merck (Stephanie), Katelyn Roper (Patrick), Matt Craig (Ashley), Bethany Jernigan (Jarrett), Zach Wilson, and Amber Wilson (Dúvon Young); 13 great-grandchildren, Kinsey Merck Kelly (Will), Tanner Merck, Kayedin Merck, Ella Roper, Brysen Roper, Von Young, Archer Young, Tucker Jernigan, Ryan Jernigan, Dax Jernigan, Corrie Jernigan, Livia Craig, and Bowen Craig; also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by grandson, Josh Merck, a brother, Doug Whitman, and a sister, Peggy Whitman.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, November 7, 2025, at Gap Hill Baptist Church. Friends and family are warmly invited to attend, as we celebrate Boyce's life and legacy. The visitation will take place at Liberty Mortuary on November 6, 2025, from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. He will be laid to rest at Gap Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Rev. Whitman will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those he touched. May we carry forward his message of love, service, and unwavering faith.
