Boyd Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Judkins Colonial Home - Plainfield on Dec. 23, 2025.
Boyd Smith "Smitty" was born to the late Willie and Mary (Taylor)
Smith on May 01,1932 in Camden, Kershaw County, South
Carolina. Boyd was educated in the Camden school system, and
attended Canty Hill Baptist Church in Cassett, South Carolina
where he accepted Christ at an early age at what was called the
mourners bench, where you "tarried" until you heard from the
Lord.
In 1952, Boyd migrated to Brooklyn, New York following the lead
of his older brothers where they supported each other until he
was able to move to Newark, New Jersey, where he joined Trinity
U.A.M.E. Church. True to the spirit of leadership, he was able to
bring his younger siblings to the north as well.
Boyd worked at Ford Motor Company for 34 years, which is also
where he met the love of his life, Dorothy Dent-Smith in 1977
through a mutual friend. They married on March 18, 1978. They
resided in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Boyd Smith was a hard working man of great integrity, discipline
and faith. He loved his wife, his family, his church and most of all,
the Lord. He was a prayer warrior. He avidly prayed for all family,
friends, and any situation in the world. He was faithful in noon
day prayer line where he would play the opening music to set the
atmosphere for prayer.
Boyd was a mentor to many and an advisor. He served on many
boards throughout his church service. Boyd had many sayings,
but his main one was to tell people to "work" and encouraging
everyone to be disciplined and "have it in your mindset or it won't
work". Boyd was an excellent bowler and was in the league for
many years. He loved to take daily walks. He also loved
gardening and sometimes would use farming and gardening to
explain things about life to make it live.
Boyd was very proud of ALL of his children and grandchildren
whom he loved and would take pride when he spoke of them.
On December 18, 2025, Boyd Smith took his flight to glory, with
his loving wife by his side.
Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Mary
Smith; siblings: Mae Bell, Corbett, Sanders, Israel, Ethel Mae,
Clenty, Rachel, Willie (W.T.), Mary Louise, Moses, Harvey James
and Gladys.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 47 years, Dorothy
Smith, children Gary Williams (Donna), Burlenda Wilson
(Charles), Sean Dixon (Kristy), and Celeste Dent. Eight
Grandchildren: Tiffany, Veronica, Erica, Israel, Ashley, Simone,
Charla and Bernita. Four Great-grandchildren, 2 sisters in law,
Vera Smith of Maryland and Othelia Lacks of Virginia and 1
brother in law, Charles Jackson of Linden, NJ and a host of
nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.
