Brad was born June 16, 1973, in Waterloo, Iowa, the youngest child of David and Carol (Hahn) Drewelow. He grew up in New Hampton, where he quickly became known for the energy, spirit, and mischief that would follow him. Family stories tell of a three-year-old Brad riding his Hot Wheels down to the grocery store in an attempt to buy himself a TV dinner-an early sign that he would always keep his parents and siblings on their toes.
Brad graduated from New Hampton High School in 1991. He later married Shannon Knight, and together they welcomed two children, Emma and Lucas. Though the couple eventually divorced, Brad remained a proud and devoted father. Brad was also blessed with his daughter, Brynn, with Dayna Collins, and he cherished the special bond he shared with each of his children.
Over the years, Brad worked various jobs throughout the area, including time at Terex in Waverly. Most recently-and the job he treasured most-he followed in his father's footsteps and worked at John Deere in Waterloo. He took immense pride in being part of the John Deere family and in carrying on that legacy.
Brad had a wide range of interests, and he lived his life fully through each of them. He loved movies, especially scary ones, and was widely known among family and friends as a true movie buff. The Fourth of July was always a highlight of his year, as he enjoyed putting on a fireworks show that could rival any town display. He had a unique fondness for Mentos gum-"his gum," as he called it-and he never went without it.
Music was a constant thread throughout Brad's life. He loved attending concerts and sharing stories about how incredible each one was. Some of his favorite memories were made at shows with his kids, especially performances by Tool, Iron & Wine, Damien Rice, and many more.
Brad also loved the outdoors. Whether it was fishing, ice fishing, hunting, camping, kayaking, or shooting his crossbow, he felt most himself surrounded by nature. Even when his health made it difficult to get out, he found joy in watching YouTube videos of others doing the activities he loved.
Another passion of Brad's was cooking-especially grilling and smoking meats. He enjoyed experimenting, trying new things, and feeding the people he loved, though he was never as enthusiastic about the cleanup afterward.
Brad had a playful, teasing way about him. He loved a good argument-mostly for fun-and he especially enjoyed razzing his parents and siblings. At family gatherings you could usually find him at the card table, happily playing any game with anyone willing to sit down.
Brad's final wishes were to try and help other people, and he did that by being an organ donor.
Brad is survived by his mother, Carol Drewelow of New Hampton; two daughters, Emma (Eddie) Denner of Cedar Rapids, Brynn (Logan) Havlik of New Hampton; one son, Lucas Drewelow of Hutchinson, MN; two grandchildren, James and Lailyn Denner; one brother, Roger (Amy) Drewelow of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Darla (Randy) Usher of Ionia.
He was preceded in death by his father, David Lee Drewelow in 2024.
