Brenda Michele Klug Peterson, 64, of Fredericksburg, VA passed away on July 5, 2023.
Brenda was raised in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA and attended North Allegheny High School. Brenda was intelligent and capable, having graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Duquesne University (1980) and a Juris Doctor from the University of Cincinnati School of Law (1983). Brenda spent the next almost 40 years working for the federal government. Brenda began her career at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH as a trainee, then moved to Tinker AFB, OK and worked as a Contract Specialist/Negotiator for five years in support of the US Air Force. Brenda attended the prestigious Naval War College in 1998. For eighteen years, Brenda worked at the US Coast Guard Headquarters as a Contracting Officer, Team Leader, and Acting Supervisor. She served as the Procurement Contracting Officer for the Motor Life Boat Replacement project, led the working group that identified instructor and training support requirements for the Training Center, and developed and implemented oral presentation procedures in lieu of written technical proposals as a streamlining initiative in sole source and competitive negotiations. In 2006, Brenda moved to the Department of Homeland Security and served in several roles including Associate Director in the Office of Procurement Operations, Departmental Operations Acquisition Division. She was an enthusiastic proponent of innovation in contracting and training. At the time of her death, Brenda was supporting the First Source III contracting team for the Department.
Outside of work, Brenda enjoyed the arts and loved to invite her friends to join her for dinner and a show at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Virginia Repertory Theatre at Hanover Tavern, and Riverside Center for the Performing Arts. Many happy memories were made on these occasions. Brenda was known to rescue cats that she found in empty parking lots. She was an avid cat and dog (birds not so much) lover and was a generous supporter of the Fredericksburg SPCA, encouraging her friends to adopt and save the kitties. Her kind, yet quiet nature left her friends and colleagues always wanting to know her better. She will be missed.
Brenda was preceded in death by her mother, Genevieve Boyer Klug, and her father, William Leo Klug. She is survived by her many friends and colleagues who profoundly mourn her death. Brenda also leaves behind her beloved cats, Micah, Danaea, Kaitlyn, and Melinda.
A memorial service to remember Brenda will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made directly to Found and Sons.
